1. The Muted Landscape | The Sukhothai Shanghai

The challenge for Sukhothai in Shanghai was to stay loyal to the essence of the original iconic hotel in Bangkok while including aspects that represent local culture and history while working with the current state of a building with a defined structure.

The guiding notion was inspired by a general condition that characterizes many dense Asian metropolises, such as Shanghai and Bangkok: a sense of vulnerability and congestion, as well as a longing for a reconnection with nature, space to breathe and recharge.
2. The Urban Oasis | Alila Bangsar

Located between Brickfields, a former colonial neighbourhood, and Bangsar, an up-and-coming area of Kuala Lumpur, the project is situated at the junction between these two districts, old and new, a conceptual linkage between the past and the present.

The hotel occupies the ground floor and the top eight floors of a new tower, with five levels of guest rooms and three levels of public areas, with Neri&Hu responsible for both architecture and interior design. A rigid structural grid defines the project from outside to inside, signalling its presence on the façade, while acting as a framework within which each function of the hotel is contained.

3. Shanghai EDITION Hotel

Following the global success of Edition Hotel’s European and American flagships in London, New York and Miami, this hotel marks the well-reputed brand’s entry into Shanghai, with plans to grow exponentially in the next few years. Neri&Hu is responsible for the design of all the interior spaces, furniture and lighting for both public areas and guestrooms. Located in hustle and bustle of Shanghai’s Nanjing East Road area, overlooking the historic Bund, the Edition Hotel encapsulates the far-eastern dichotomy: firmly grounded in its cultural heritage, while fully engaging with its contemporary context.

The hotel entry is formed by a new podium connecting two existing adjacent buildings of distinct architectural styles, the challenge was to bridge between the vibrancy of the art deco block building and the brutalism of the post-modern tower above. Neri&Hu’s design answers the challenge by offering guests a journey through Shanghai’s history, each space within embodying elements of the city’s past, present, and future. The podium stages a large floating walnut structure hovering above the main lobby to provide a sense of intimate grandeur at the bar and lounge areas.

4. Penta Hotel Hong Kong

Centred in the old industrial district of San Po Kong, Penta Hotel (Kowloon) is an upcoming hospitality landmark of 713 keys. Continuing the hotel’s signature concept as a ‘city with attraction nodes’, architect Neri&Hu integrated dashes of vernacular culture unique to Hong Kong throughout this 33-story interior. As home to the open-seating pizza bar, the ground floor is a casual hangout marked by concrete walls laced with graffiti and a rustic pizza oven soaring multi-levels above.
