The Marriott Norfolk Waterside is using Baskervill’s architecture, hotel interior design, and MEP engineering teams to modernize the 24-story, 405-key property’s public spaces. A custom chandelier with billowing orbs stacked and layered like sails of a ship points to smooth waters ahead in the lobby—peppered with vermilion and navy tones that pull guests toward the reception desk, where local trinkets rest on shelving created by an oar-shaped wrap detail. Weathered woods and modern furnishings that bend toward the push and pull of an invisible wind add depth and character to the interior design of hotel’s cosy M Club Lounge and adjacent bar.

There, centuries of flowing water on exposed rocks have carved out and reshaped the sediment, textures, and colours of the surrounding landscape—delineating the mountains from the tidal plains.

An embodiment of nature and a celebration of Richmond’s spirit and palpable diversity is achieved through thoughtful layering of materials (stone, glass, wood, and metal), with a grounding palette of neutrals. Rich colours as accents offset this base, complemented by a variety of textures— from polished to rough-hewn.

Outside, faded stone and brick contrast with warm, dark bronze finishes creating a modern yet classic exterior for the seven-story, 132-room property. Natural-inspired interior design elements continue throughout the hotel interior design. The lobby, which features sculptural wooden screens to keep the space open while simultaneously offering intimate seating areas, mixes splashes of sunny yellows and cool greys with bold woodland-patterned fabrics. In select rooms, desks feature an overhead canopy that separates the lounge area from the bed, making space a touch more like a studio loft that does double-duty as workspace and living space.

The Stonewall Jackson Hotel—a family-owned property recognized by the National Trust Historic Hotels of America—represents a new generation of southern hospitality.

The renovated lobby—which doubles as a flexible working area and charismatic cocktail lounge—hues of a rich blue mix with earthy tones to mirror Shenandoah Valley’s sensational views, while new furnishings featuring intricate Art-Deco detailing and impeccable woodwork symbolize the hotel interior design original opening in the 1920s. Then there’s the revamped restaurant: The Magnolia South, which was aptly renamed to pay homage to the magnolia tree planted by the owner and his grandmother (located at the southern end of the building).

Baskervill partnered with SMI Hotel Group for a complete reimagining of The Commonwealth hotel interior design historic identity, renovating the 11-story boutique property’s lobby, restaurant, meeting spaces, and 59-suite styled guestrooms.

No matter where you are within the interior design of the hotel, there’s a constant juxtaposition aimed at balancing new and old, subtle and bold, geometric and organic. From animated murals (a nod to a city covered in them) to unique guestroom monikers fashioned after famous local landmarks and people, there’s a rich story around every corner. Black and white photographs previously hung in guestrooms, many at least 100 years old, now hang in the hotel’s restaurant honouring the hotel’s vibrant legacy.

Baskervill provided interior design services to Cooper Carry Architects for the new Hilton Norfolk The Main hotel and conference centre, including the property’s multi-story atrium, lobby and public spaces, and 300 guestrooms and suites. The property’s luxe Executive Level boasts a private lounge and elegant suite spaces.

The goal of the hotel interior design is to work seamlessly with the architecture, creating an organic geometry of overlapping linear forms to define spaces. In the atrium, use of stone and steel reference the locality and shipbuilding heritage, while warm woods soften the look. Alternating floor tiles create a sense of wayfinding. Terraces between levels are landscaped oases of privacy with plush seating creating a park-like feel. The second-level lobby reinforces the language of the atrium spaces with crisp metallic neutrals, sculptural accents, and textural influences, infused with rich, warm furniture and soft goods selections.

The guest experience is meant to follow a progression from nature to the built environment, utilizing repetitive elements of varying materiality and focal artwork. The six-story, 140-room hotel interior design is an anchor of the new Celebration Pointe development. Focused on experiential travel, the hotel feature localized food and beverage options to connect travellers to the community and neighbourhood itself.

Baskervill provided architectural and interior design services for this comprehensive renovation of the property’s public spaces and guestrooms, including an outdoor patio and garden area. First floor areas were reconfigured to include the brand’s signature media salons, AC Lounge Bar, AC Kitchen, and AC Library.

Guestrooms are AC’s prototypical Oscura Scheme, while public spaces reflect Atlanta’s multi-cultural landscape. Hints of rich purple and teal accent the brand’s neutral canvas. The design highlights details and trends in couture seen over time through purposeful art, fabric, and furniture selections.

9. AC Hotel Kingston- Kingston, Jamaica

AC Hotel Kingston- Kingston, Jamaica

Taking inspiration from the region’s Blue Mountains, a rhythm of pushing and pulling elements create an active backdrop for a unique guest experience. The hotel interior design also includes a custom outdoor stage for live music and community events, pool and pool deck, and a number of retail tenant spaces for a seafood market, restaurant, coffee shop, rental car dealership, and salon. Inside, layering of light wood walls, warm neutral floors, and textural stone tile imparts a tranquil atmosphere elevated by pops of vibrant green. Baskervill is providing site master planning, architectural, and interior design services for the project.

10. AC Hotel San Juan Condado- San Juan, Puerto Rico

AC Hotel San Juan Condado- San Juan, Puerto Rico

Once home to the storied Ambassador Hotel & Casino, the hotel interior design celebrates the clean lines of the building’s 1970s rationalist architecture, with notable touches in every detail. The hotel’s 223 guestrooms include 46 suites and follow AC’s guestroom prototype. To rework the property for life as a modern hotel, the public spaces were completely gutted and reworked.

The first-level bar takes on a “jewel box” aesthetic — reflective blue glass, chrome, and backlit accents — and is open to the street for enjoyment by guests and locals alike. Home to San Juan’s only rooftop pool, the property’s second bar, targeted to guests, joins other rooftop elements, including AC Kitchen, AC Lounge, meeting space, and fitness facilities. Outside, the Porte cochere’s vibrant LED ceiling lights and live green walls welcome guests with the assurance that this is indeed “a new way to the hotel.”
