Mercado Little Spain<\/em> is the sprawling culinary tribute to tapas king and celebrity chef\u00a0Jos\u00e9 Andr\u00e9s\u00a0and it consists of three full-service restaurants, 15 dining and retail kiosks, and two dedicated modern interior design bars<\/strong>. Just as with the food, the interior\u2014bursting with artwork, custom murals, materials, and furnishings\u2014presents a taste of Spain to a New York audience \u2013 some bar design ideas<\/em> for you!<\/p>\n

In\u00a0the\u00a0Morpheus hotel<\/em>\u00a0in Macau,\u00a0a\u00a0curving corridor to the north leads to\u00a0Voyages<\/em> by Alain Ducasse, its entrance anchored by a massive circular bar of heavily veined marble with a glittering armada of backlit bottles arrayed on stainless-steel shelves.\u00a0In the dining room, a wall-size panel in\u00a0 tangerine displays an installation of 100 tiles printed with delightfully playful food drawings by French illustrator L\u00e9a Maupetit, interspersed with brief recipes and notes handwritten on the tiles by Ducasse \u2013 for inspiring bar design ideas<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Commissary by\u00a0\u00a0Jorge Pardo<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

When Headington Companies, fresh off the success of Forty Five Ten and the Joule Hotel, asked\u00a0Jorge Pardo\u00a0to do something with a drab brown brick-and-concrete building in downtown Dallas, he\u00a0wanted to take his time.\u00a0\u201cI took a color inventory of the center of the city,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of gray, so I thought it would be interesting to have something that reflects the sky and is a break with the architecture.\u201d He then found ceramic tiles made in Guadalajara that could withstand the Texas climate.\u00a0The result is\u00a0Commissary, a five-story market and espresso bar covered, inside and out, in a vibrant combination of more than 27,000 blue and white tiles.<\/p>\n

Shanghai Eatery Icha Chateau by\u00a0Edward Tan and\u00a0Foo Chit Kyan<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

When deciding on a name for the firm they were founding in 2014, designers Edward Tan, now 31, and Foo Chit Kyan, 40, went with\u00a0Spacemen. They are always thinking about space, after all. But the futuristic reference also links to the firm\u2019s aesthetic: bold and experiential<\/em>, particularly apparent in the studio\u2019s hos\u00adpitality projects<\/a>. One such is Icha Chateau, a Western fusion restaurant and teahouse in Shanghai.<\/p>\n

Modern Residence by\u00a0Kingston Lafferty Design<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

To create the interiors for the largest of several\u00a0conversions at landmarked country estate Bolton Hall near Dublin\u2014the two-story, 3,000-square-foot Coach House\u2014real estate developer Homeland hired\u00a0Kingston Lafferty Design, a Dublin firm founded by R\u00f3is\u00edn Lafferty, who had previously worked on one of the development\u2019s townhouses.\u00a0Lafferty brought her love of tile to the project. \u201cPeople think of it as cold and hard, for bathrooms and kitchens only,\u201d she says. \u201cBut I like it in living and dining spaces and even in bedrooms.\u201d In fact, she\u2019s used it in various forms all over the house, from solid and decorative Moroccan tiles<\/em> made in the traditional way to contemporary geometrics that recall the groundbreaking ceramics of Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti.<\/p>\n

Apartment by MuseLAB<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

A young couple about to start a family had also just bought an apartment in Mumbai\u2019s seaside Worli neighborhood\u2014when the past came flooding back in the form of memories of a childhood apartment full of Art Deco objects and terrazzo tiles.\u00a0The couple called their friends at\u00a0MuseLAB\u00a0with the idea of bringing the past into their present, 1,250-square-foot home. Real-estate developer\u00a0Madison\u00a0Marquette\u2019s new headquarters at the Wharf in Washington, D.C., designed by\u00a0Perkins + Will,\u00a0purposefully blurs the traditional lines between living, work, and leisure.\u00a0Most of the 17,800-square-foot workplace operates on the show-don\u2019t-tell principle, borrowing odd angles for phone rooms, embedding device chargers in terrazzo counters, and combining textures and finishes such as bright blue tiles<\/em> in the kitchen, befitting a luxury hotel<\/a>.<\/p>\n
