German designer\u00a0Sebastian Herkner<\/strong><\/em>, who trained at Offenbach University of Art and Design, was announced as\u00a0Maison et Objet 2019<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u2018s pick for\u00a0Designer Of The Year<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0of the January 2019 edition.<\/p>\n

At only 37 years old, Sebastian\u00a0is embarking on an ever-growing number of collaborations with\u00a0international design houses. <\/strong><\/em>Same of the collaborations ongoing at 2018 is Moroso, Dedon, Thonet, and Lintello.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Over the course of the past decade, he has received some thirty awards in recognition of his innovative yet traditional work.<\/p>\n

For his exceptional interior design projects, the meteoric success was imminent\u00a0and already reflected in numerous awards and prizes, among them the 2011 German Design Award<\/strong><\/em> in the Newcomer category and the 2015 EDIDA Elle Decoration International Design Award<\/strong><\/em> as Best International Newcomer. Most recently, Sebastian Herkner was appointed guest of honor at imm Cologne 2016<\/strong><\/em> to present his concept for \u201cDas Haus \u2013 Interiors on Stage\u201d.<\/p>\n

Maison et Objet has continually sought to honor designers whose originality and excellence impact their generation, and Herkner\u2019s career has received wide recognition that propelled him onto the trade fair\u2019s radar.<\/p>\n

Sebastian Herkner has unremittingly focused on creating designs that fuse tradition with creativity,\u00a0new technology with craftsmanship.\u00a0In 2006 he founded his own studio for objects, interior design and exhibition design in Offenbach am Main.<\/p>\n

His unconditional love for traditional craftsmanship and color made him a global and cosmopolitan design who draw inspiration at all culture expression of the world. This search to multiples inspirations was what guided his first landmark design, the\u00a0\u201cBell\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0table, whose steel and brass platter nestles on a hand-blown glass base produced in a centuries-old Bavarian glass factory.<\/p>\n

But in 2009, no design house wanted to back the project.\u00a0Three years after creating the \u201cBell\u201d table, the table became a best-seller after Herkner had an encounter with ClassiCon.<\/strong><\/em> Herkner\u2019s designs regularly combine up-to-the-minute technology, seen in the \u201c118\u201d chair, which uses a mix of CNC milling and steam bending to fashion the wood.<\/p>\n

His appetite for a challenge and relentless desire to explore unchartered territory has not only led him to design glasses, bicycles and perfume bottles or make forays into the world of interior design, but also to embark on an internship with Stella McCartney during the course of his studies.<\/p>\n

Another of his iconic pieces, the\u00a0\u201cOda\u201d floor lamp (Pulpo, 2014)<\/strong>, bears testament to that. Resembling a reservoir of light, the design was directly inspired by photographic images of water towers captured by Bernd and Hilla Becher. Every single source of inspiration is perfectly in tune with his quest for authenticity, his desire to use sustainable materials, and his sense of respect for the time it takes to create a truly stunning piece.<\/p>\n

Today, Sebastian Herkner works for international companies, designs furniture and lamps, porcelain and glass, and also curates and stages exhibitions dealing with design.<\/p>\n
